The Life in the UK Test is a computer-based test you must pass for British citizenship (naturalisation) and for most settlement (indefinite leave to remain) applications. It has 24 multiple-choice questions, you get 45 minutes, and you must score 75% (18 out of 24) to pass. Every question is drawn from the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition). About the Life in the UK Test
The Life in the UK Test is set by the Home Office and taken in person at an approved test centre. You must pass it to become a British citizen and for most applications to settle in the UK (indefinite leave to remain). If you passed it for your settlement application, you do not need to take it again when you later apply for citizenship.
Test format
The test has 24 multiple-choice questions and lasts 45 minutes. You must answer at least 18 correctly — a score of 75% — to pass; 17 or fewer is a fail. There is no penalty for guessing, so never leave a question blank. Our mocks reproduce the format you meet on the day: 24 questions, one at a time, no feedback until you finish.

Booking, cost and results
You book the test online through the official GOV.UK service at least 3 days in advance, choosing a centre and date and paying the £50 fee. There are over 30 test centres across the UK. You get your result at the centre on the same day; if you pass, you receive a unique reference number to use in your citizenship or settlement application. Are the rules changing?
The government’s May 2025 immigration white paper proposed reforms to the settlement and citizenship system — including a move toward an "earned settlement" model, a longer standard qualifying period for settlement, and a review of the Life in the UK Test. As of mid-2026 these are proposals under consultation and are not yet in force; the 24-question, 45-minute, 75% test based on the 3rd-edition handbook remains the current requirement. Always confirm the current rules on GOV.UK before booking or applying.

Who needs to take the Life in the UK Test?
Most people applying for British citizenship (naturalisation) or for settlement (indefinite leave to remain) must pass it. You are exempt if you are under 18, are 65 or over, have a long-term physical or mental condition (with a doctor’s letter or exemption form), or have already passed it — for example when you settled and are now applying for citizenship.
